Programme Intern – Good Governance – NIGAWD, Nigeria

Organisation Description

The New Generation Girls and Women Development Initiative (NIGAWD) is a woman-led, non-governmental and not-for-profit organisation based in Nigeria. Established in 2012, NIGAWD works to empower women and girls as positive drivers of social change. Its work spans gender-based violence prevention and response, women’s empowerment, sexual and reproductive health and rights, women’s political participation, democracy and good governance, climate change, and ending harmful practices such as female genital mutilation.

Project Scope

This project will support NIGAWD’s work relating to democracy, good governance and civic participation through research, stakeholder mapping and programme development:

  • Conducting desk research on 2–3 agreed themes relating to democracy and good governance in Nigeria, such as youth civic participation, electoral integrity, political inclusion, accountability or anti-corruption.

  • Reviewing relevant policies, legislation and research relating to the selected governance themes.

  • Researching examples of good practice in youth engagement, civic education and citizen participation.

  • Mapping 8–10 relevant civil society organisations, public institutions, networks or initiatives working within the governance space.

  • Supporting the development or refinement of one governance-focused programme concept, activity or campaign.

  • Developing 2–3 programme resources, such as briefing notes, stakeholder materials, civic education content or advocacy materials.

  • Producing practical recommendations that could inform NIGAWD’s future good governance programming.

Project Outcomes

  • A concise research report covering 2–3 agreed democracy and good governance themes.

  • A stakeholder map featuring approximately 8–10 relevant organisations, institutions or initiatives.

  • A summary of relevant good-practice approaches and programme examples.

  • A draft concept or recommendations for one governance-focused programme, activity or campaign.

  • 2–3 draft programme, civic education or advocacy resources.

  • A final handover document outlining findings, recommendations and potential next steps.

Internship Requirements

  • Governance & Politics Interest: Strong interest in democracy, governance, civic participation, public policy or international development.

  • Research & Analytical Skills: Ability to conduct structured desk research and synthesise information from different sources.

  • Political & Social Awareness: Interest in understanding political institutions, civil society and governance challenges.

  • Writing & Documentation: Ability to produce concise research, briefing and programme materials.

  • Academic Background: Students studying political science, politics, international relations, development studies, law or other social sciences may be particularly suited to the role.

  • Collaboration: Strong communication skills and willingness to work with NIGAWD’s programme team and incorporate feedback.
