Programme Intern – Gender – NIGAWD, Nigeria

Organisation Description

The New Generation Girls and Women Development Initiative (NIGAWD) is a woman-led, non-governmental and not-for-profit organisation based in Nigeria. Established in 2012, NIGAWD works to empower women and girls as positive drivers of social change. Its work spans gender-based violence prevention and response, women’s empowerment, sexual and reproductive health and rights, women’s political participation, democracy and good governance, climate change, and ending harmful practices such as female genital mutilation.

Project Scope

This project will support NIGAWD’s programme team with research and programme development relating to gender equality and the rights and wellbeing of women and girls:

  • Conducting desk research on 2–3 priority gender issues relevant to NIGAWD’s current programmes, such as gender-based violence, harmful practices, women’s rights or women’s political participation.

  • Reviewing relevant policies, legislation, research and good-practice approaches relating to the selected issues.

  • Mapping 8–10 relevant organisations, initiatives or stakeholders working on similar gender issues in Nigeria and/or the wider region.

  • Supporting the development or refinement of one gender-focused programme concept, activity or campaign.

  • Developing a short evidence and resource bank that can support future programme design and advocacy.

  • Drafting 2–3 programme or advocacy materials, such as briefing notes, awareness materials, stakeholder briefs or programme content.

  • Developing practical recommendations for strengthening the selected programme area based on the research undertaken.

Project Outcomes

  • A concise research report covering 2–3 agreed gender-related priority areas.

  • A stakeholder map featuring approximately 8–10 relevant organisations or initiatives.

  • A structured evidence and resource bank for future programme development.

  • A draft concept or set of recommendations for one gender-focused programme, activity or campaign.

  • 2–3 draft programme or advocacy materials.

  • A final handover document outlining findings, recommendations and potential next steps.

Internship Requirements

  • Gender & Development Interest: Strong interest in gender equality, women’s rights, international development or social justice.

  • Research & Analytical Skills: Ability to undertake desk research and synthesise information from different sources.

  • Policy Awareness: Interest in understanding policies and legislation affecting women and girls.

  • Writing & Documentation: Ability to communicate research findings clearly and produce concise programme materials.

  • Academic Background: Students from social sciences, international development, politics, law or related disciplines may be particularly suited to the project.

  • Sensitivity & Professionalism: Ability to engage appropriately with sensitive topics, including gender-based violence and harmful practices.
