Marketing Intern – Fablab Winam, Kenya

Organisation Description

Fablab Winam is a community-based innovation hub in Kisumu, Kenya, dedicated to empowering young people, women, and local entrepreneurs through technology, creativity, and practical problem-solving. The organisation provides access to digital fabrication tools, STEAM learning, technical training, and mentorship, enabling communities to design solutions that address real social and economic challenges. Through its innovation programmes, youth skills development activities, and collaborations with schools, community groups, and development partners, Fablab Winam fosters local innovation, digital inclusion, and community-driven impact.

Project Scope

This project will support Fablab Winam to strengthen its marketing and digital communications, increasing awareness of its programmes, opportunities and community impact among young people, partners and other key audiences:

  • Reviewing Fablab Winam’s existing digital marketing and social media activity to identify strengths, gaps, and opportunities for improvement.

  • Benchmarking 5–8 comparable innovation hubs, makerspaces, STEAM organisations, or youth-focused social enterprises to identify effective marketing approaches.

  • Developing a 6–8 week marketing and content plan aligned with Fablab Winam’s programmes and target audiences.

  • Creating 8–10 pieces of social media content promoting programmes, opportunities, events, success stories, and community impact.

  • Developing 4–6 simple visual assets or adaptable templates to accompany digital content.

  • Developing 2–3 longer-form pieces, such as participant stories, programme features, website articles, or impact stories.

  • Identifying opportunities to strengthen Fablab Winam’s messaging and calls to action for young people, entrepreneurs, partners, and supporters.

  • Developing practical recommendations for increasing digital reach, engagement, and consistency across Fablab Winam’s communications.

Project Outcomes

  • A short review of Fablab Winam’s current digital marketing and communications.

  • A benchmarking review of 5–8 relevant organisations.

  • A 6–8 week marketing and content plan.

  • 8–10 pieces of draft social media content.

  • 4–6 visual assets or reusable content templates.

  • 2–3 longer-form programme, participant, or impact stories.

  • Recommendations for strengthening audience engagement, messaging, and calls to action.

  • An organised content bank and brief marketing handover guide for future use.

Internship Requirements

  • Marketing & Communications: Interest in digital marketing, social media, branding, or communications.

  • Content Development: Ability to produce clear, engaging, and audience-appropriate written content.

  • Research & Analytical Skills: Ability to conduct desktop research, benchmark organisations, and identify useful marketing approaches.

  • Digital & Creative Skills: Familiarity with social media platforms and basic design tools such as Canva or Adobe Express would be beneficial.

  • Innovation & Development Awareness: Interest in youth innovation, entrepreneurship, STEAM education, technology, or community development.

  • Collaboration: Strong communication skills and the ability to work well with the Fablab Winam team and respond to feedback.
