Curriculum Development & Research Intern – Nalafem, Kenya

Organisation Description

Nalafem is a multigenerational platform of women political leaders working towards the liberation of African women and girls. Since its inception in 2021, Nalafem has built a pan-African platform combining feminist leadership, advocacy, capacity building, grant-making and convening. Its work focuses on strengthening the political, social and economic power of African women and girls, bridging the gaps between policy and implementation, grassroots and intergovernmental spaces, and generations of women leaders. Its initiatives include the Nalafem Academy, I AM NALA Fellowship, Nala Fund and Nalafem Summit.

Project Scope

This project will support curriculum development for Nalafem’s I AM NALA Fellowship, focusing on Women, Peace and Security (WPS) and Technology-Facilitated Gender-Based Violence (TFGBV). The intern will undertake structured research and translate relevant evidence, frameworks and case studies into accessible learning materials for future fellows:

  • Conducting a focused literature review of at least 8 relevant reports, toolkits, frameworks and case studies covering WPS and TFGBV.

  • Researching and summarising key African, multilateral and international frameworks relevant to the two fellowship themes.

  • Identifying practical African case studies and examples that can be incorporated into fellowship learning.

  • Developing draft curriculum structures for the WPS and TFGBV fellowship tracks.

  • Drafting at least 2 training modules: one focused on WPS and one on TFGBV.

  • Developing learning objectives, core content, discussion questions and suggested learning activities for each module.

  • Compiling a curated resource list of at least 15 external readings, tools and learning resources for fellows’ self-directed learning.

  • Organising the research and draft materials using Nalafem’s existing curriculum format for review and refinement by the Fellowship team.

Project Outcomes

  • A structured literature review drawing on at least 8 relevant WPS and TFGBV resources.

  • 2 draft curriculum structures: one for the WPS fellowship track and one for the TFGBV fellowship track.

  • At least 2 draft training modules, comprising one WPS and one TFGBV module, with learning objectives, core content, discussion questions and suggested activities.

  • A curated resource bank containing at least 15 vetted readings, tools and external learning resources.

  • Relevant African case studies and examples identified for incorporation into the curriculum.

  • 2 consolidated draft curriculum packages organised for review by Nalafem’s Fellowship team.

  • A concise handover document identifying areas requiring further development ahead of the 2027 fellowship cohort.

Internship Requirements

  • Research & Analytical Skills: Ability to conduct structured literature and policy research and synthesise complex information.

  • Gender & Policy Interest: Strong interest in gender equality, women’s rights, peace and security, technology policy or international development.

  • Writing & Curriculum Development: Ability to translate research into clear, structured and accessible learning materials.

  • Policy Awareness: Interest in African and international policy frameworks relating to women’s rights and gender equality.

  • Critical Thinking: Ability to assess the relevance and credibility of sources, case studies and learning resources.

  • Academic Background: Students from international relations, politics, peace and conflict studies, development studies, gender studies, law or related social sciences may be particularly suited to the project.

  • Collaboration: Strong communication skills and willingness to work with Nalafem’s Fellowship team and incorporate feedback.
