Organisation Description

Fablab Winam is a community-based innovation hub in Kisumu, Kenya, dedicated to empowering young people, women and local entrepreneurs through technology, creativity and practical problem-solving. The organisation provides access to digital fabrication tools, STEAM learning, technical training and mentorship, enabling communities to design solutions that address real social and economic challenges. Through its innovation programmes, youth skills development activities and collaborations with schools, community groups and development partners, Fablab Winam fosters local innovation, digital inclusion and community-driven impact.

Project Scope

This project contributes to Fablab Winam's mission of turning local ideas into tangible products by translating concepts, sketches and reference images from entrepreneurs and innovators into production-ready 2D and 3D CAD models optimised for digital fabrication:

• Designing parametric 3D models in software such as Fusion 360, SolidWorks or FreeCAD based on client specifications.

• Optimising files for the lab's machines, ensuring correct tolerances for 3D printing, interlocking joints for CNC wood routing and clean vector paths for laser cutting.

• Producing clear 2D engineering drawings with dimensions, material specifications and simple assembly guides for the on-site workshop team.

• Developing at least 5 standardised, open-source CAD templates adapted for local materials.

• Preparing production-ready file packages, including .STL, .STEP and .DXF files, for ongoing lab innovation projects.

• Drafting a design error troubleshooting guide covering common pitfalls in CNC and 3D printing workflows.

Project Outcomes

• A curated portfolio of at least 5 standardised, open-source CAD templates adapted for local materials.

• Production-ready file packages, including .STL, .STEP and .DXF files, for ongoing lab innovation projects.

• Clear 2D engineering drawings with dimensions, material specifications and assembly guides.

• A design error troubleshooting guide for CNC and 3D printing workflows.
